Escapism

I'm off for a while! It can be so nice to continue watching your favorite series after a hard day's work, enjoy a concert or be drawn into a novel. It feels like a little break – a digital or analog mini-vacation that you don't want to miss out on. Long live escapism, we've earned it! The only thing that's hard is stopping, in other words, returning to reality.

What is escapism?

Escapism as an escape from reality into an illusory world is a psychological term that originated in the 1960s, when TV consumption increased considerably and psychological consequences were observed. The term usually has a negative connotation, as there is a fear that overindulgence can lead to serious problems and result in a loss of reality. Today, the temptation is more omnipresent than ever: Netflix, TikTok and Audible are always there and in a spare minute, which may not even be a real spare minute, escape is just a tab away - addiction symptoms included. In many respects, reality doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the virtual illusory world.

Why is this so relevant to us?

As a UX designer, for example, I initially make myself aware that almost all consumer apps are usually also used to a certain extent as a place of escape. High quality in terms of aesthetics, color psychology, software ergonomics, etc. can turn normal app use into a small positive escapism experience. If I apply this insight to industrial users who spend several hours a day using management, analysis or control apps, I would like to provide them with small escapes as breaks for the senses.
