Shy Tech

Conspicuously inconspicuous – the increasing networking of our living and working environments has made high-tech products omnipresent for us. We surround ourselves with an increasing number of screens and smart assistants that guide us into parallel digital worlds: the home is becoming a smart home, the car an infotainment object and smart wearables accompany us at every turn in our leisure time.

What is Shy Tech?

“Shy Tech” describes the idea of reducing the omnipresence of high-tech products. At first glance, devices should appear less technical and blend discreetly and unobtrusively into their surroundings. This design approach is reflected in product and interaction design and primarily pursues the philosophy that technology should adapt to people – and not the other way around. It is a counter-movement that has its origins in people’s longing for the natural, the desire for a real-digital resonance experience and the pursuit of a life in the here and now.

Why is this trend so important for us?

Shy Tech places the design focus on natural materials and shapes as well as tactile surfaces. In addition, the trend embodies the view that natural interfaces, such as control by voice, touch, facial expressions or gestures, will manifest themselves in the operation of work equipment, computers and smart devices. In this way, Shy Tech opens the door to a world filled with alternative and exciting interaction possibilities that want to fit into our lives in a more emphatic, intuitive and sensual way.
