Task and approach

CLAAS commissioned UXMA in 2016 to analyze a farmer's work processes with his vehicle. The declared aim was to devise new processes that would make the farmer's work easier and at the same time increase his productivity.

The collaboration began with a comprehensive requirements analysis, which of course included us directly in the field at the controls of CLAAS machines. It became clear that the basic work process is the same for all machines: preparation, road travel, field travel and headland. The differences between the respective agricultural machines – tractor, combine harvester and forage harvester – lay solely in their type of application.

Following the analysis phase, user scenarios and storyboards were used to develop a consistent interaction and operating concept for various models of CLAAS tractors, forage harvesters and combine harvesters. In order to simplify the basic user experience and map complex content individually, UXMA proposed and implemented a new user interface with touch function for the development of the operating terminal. This was converted into an interactive prototype, which was used to carry out comprehensive usability tests under real conditions in the field.

Solution

"CEBIS Touch" is a comprehensive operator terminal based on a standardized concept for controlling all CLAAS field machines of different configurations. Thanks to the linking of individual applications and machine settings in just one system, functions are intelligently networked with each other. All operating elements and applications can be individually configured within a flexible layout. This ensures that the user is shown his personal working environment and the information relevant to him.

The collaboration between UXMA and CLAAS laid the foundation for the CEBIS system, which is still being continuously developed and optimized today.
