PWA for the rehabilitation aftercare of breast cancer patients

Smart support with the ReNaApp

Smartphone with four different screens of the ReNaApp.

Digital aftercare that motivates: As part of a research project at the Institute for Social Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Lübeck, we have relaunched the ReNaApp - a progressive web app that helps breast cancer patients to get more exercise into their everyday lives after their rehab. With technical modernization, empathetic design and a real focus on the needs of patients.

Existing app, valuable ideas

After breast cancer, regular exercise plays a key role in recovery and well-being. This is precisely where the ReNaApp from the research project at the Institute of Social Medicine and Epidemiology (ISE) at the University of Lübeck comes in: It aims to motivate female patients to live more actively. The existing app was to be brought up to the latest technical standard. The extensive feedback from users and patient representatives as part of a transfer project was also taken into account and incorporated into the further development.

Patients who exercise regularly after breast cancer aftercare strengthen their physical and mental well-being.

Technically modernized, empathetically developed

UXMA has put the ReNaApp on a new technical and design footing – with the aim of creating a reliable application for affected women that is suitable for everyday use. Together with the ISE, we carefully prioritized the wishes and requirements of the patients and implemented them realistically within the available budget. The technical basis was completely modernized: We migrated the app to Vue 3 and relaunched it as a Progressive Web App (PWA). The design was also overhauled with a view to comprehensibility, empathy and accessibility – for an app that feels like a reliable companion.

Scientifically sound, designed for everyday use

The ReNaApp is ready for use again – and now actively supports patients in integrating exercise into their everyday lives. It also serves as the digital basis for an accompanying ISE study investigating the effectiveness of digital motivation in medical aftercare. In this way, the project not only provides individual support, but also contributes to the further development of patient-centered care.

Funding for this project was made possible by third-party funding from the German Pension Insurance Association.
