Boßeln, but digital please!

UXMA has been working closely with Fachhochschule Kiel University of Applied Sciences for many years and offers young people the opportunity to carry out semester projects in a corporate context. Our aim is to get students excited about our processes in software development and user experience and to give them a realistic insight into the project reality beyond the university context. This year, students on the Media Engineering course took up our passion for our favorite team event, "Boßeln", and created the UXMA-Boßel app, a digital helper for a very analog leisure sport.

The students from Kiel University of Applied Sciences present the results of their Boßel app project to the UXMA team.

Interdisciplinary teamwork

Roughly translated, the Media Engineering degree program is "UXMA at the university" and expands the aspects of computer science in its curriculum in an interdisciplinary way to include user experience design. For both areas, the young developers were provided with competent mentors from software (Joost Dücker) and design (Lara Laddey). The aim of the project was to provide a functional app for the digitalization of event support before the annual company-internal late-summer Boßeln.

From idea to application

In order to realize the task, an initial Boßel tour helped the students to understand the challenges in the best possible way and to be able to design user-oriented solutions.

The mobile application was developed with Flutter in conjunction with Firebase on a cross-platform basis in order to be able to offer it to all employees, regardless of their mobile devices.

The app includes the following functions:

  • Creating teams and adding members

  • Adjustments to the teams, e.g. renaming, deleting

  • Differentiation between "normal" players and team leaders or game hosts (with different rights)

  • Counting of throws (digital score list)

  • Adding a route

  • Route view - with start and end point

  • Creation of statuses, e.g. "Playing" or "Ball lost"

  • Live view of the scores of the other teams (scoreboard)

  • Final, digital "award ceremony" with podium illustration

An additional feature is the creation and management of individual games and teams in a web part, so that the preparations can be easily edited on the computer before the Boßel Tour.

The team that developed the Boßel app stands in the garden of the Kiel office building and shows the app on their smartphones.

The final product was presented and tested by the students in the UXMA office in Kiel. We are really looking forward to using the app for the first time at the upcoming Boßelevent.
