Visions of Tomorrow – ThriftHub

How can innovative technology and human-centered design merge? In our “Visions of Tomorrow” series, we provide an insight into our creative processes. We show concepts that deal with solving real challenges and have potential for tomorrow. This time, we are looking at how to make sustainable consumption even more accessible.

A person holding a smarthpone stands in front of a big box with storefront window. It is visualising the idea of the secondhand box.

Second-hand box in public spaces

Sustainable consumption is becoming increasingly important because more and more people feel the need to live more responsibly and conserve resources. At the same time, consumer habits are changing. Growing online trade and the decline in bricks-and-mortar stores are making it more difficult to make urban spaces vibrant and attractive. We have addressed precisely these challenges.

The result: ThriftHub.

ThriftHub is a glass display for used items in the middle of the city - a modern combination of flea market and packing station. Second-hand and handmade products can be discovered and purchased here around the clock. The seamless app integration with a digital sales platform makes buying the desired goods as easy as possible.

Physical. Digital. Connected.

The digital platform maps the entire purchasing process and enhances it with smart features for individual consumption.

With just a few clicks, a seller reserves a space in the nearest ThriftHub via the app, enters the price and description and places the item in a numbered compartment. Interested parties on site scan the QR code on the locker, pay contactlessly via the app and remove the item immediately - no waiting, no direct exchange necessary. Around the clock, uncomplicated and barrier-free. Both sides benefit from maximum flexibility and smooth processing.

Favorite profiles, notifications for similar items and requests can also be set. The sales platform can also be expanded with gamification and community features to get more people interested in sustainable consumption. ThriftHub offers individualized, next-generation sustainable shopping through a combination of digital platform and physical display.

Second-hand – smart and sustainable

The ThriftHub offers a feasible approach that makes urban spaces more attractive and supports those interested in sustainable shopping behavior. The concept can be flexibly expanded - for example with modules for used clothing and donation collections, refrigerated compartments for food sharing or secure areas for storing first aid kits. The glass sales display encourages second-hand shopping and exploring the city. It links our highly digitalized everyday lives with local added value.

What do you think about our shopping behavior in the future? What values and tools will shape it? We look forward to exchanging ideas and developing concepts together.

This project is a fictitious pitch.
